Kirito is hired by a shadowy corporation to playtest Bomb Stream Online, a popular new VRMMO that secretly serves as a front for a spambot that has gained sentience and wants to wire the entire global economy to Nigeria.

While in the game, he meets Akeelah, a naive green-haired pirate looking for vengeance. She falls madly in love with Kirito after he effortlessly defeats her in a duel. At no point does he actually return her affections beyond some vague declarations of friendship.

In the climactic finale, Kirito and Akeelah are completely outclassed and nearly killed by the main villain, but Kirito turns the tables and saves the day after randomly being gifted a new power by the cyber-ghost of a previous villain. They escape the game, and Akeelah goes on to join Kirito’s group of friends and be completely irrelevant in all future story arcs aside from some minor cameos.
